Uncasville, CT (February 28, 2022) – Jonquel Jones and UMMC Ekaterinburg opened up this week’s off-season play with a win in a EuroLeague matchup against MBA Moscow, 104-65. J. Jones led the way for her squad, tallying a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds. UMMC Ekaterinburg finished the EuroLeague regular season 14-0 and will be the top seed in EuroLeague postseason play.
A Connecticut Sun matchup followed later in the week for J. Jones and UMMC Ekaterinburg, as they faced off against Russian League opponent Natisha Hiedeman and Nadezhda. UMMC Ekaterinburg came away with a decisive victory, 88-50. J. Jones had a double-double with 18 points, 17 rebounds, two assists and one block. Hiedeman added eight points, seven rebounds and three assists for her squad.
Jasmine Thomas, Dewanna Bonner and CBK Mersin defeated Joyner Holmes and Prometey in Game 1 of the EuroCup Playoffs Round of 8, 86-67. Bonner notched a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, along with two steals. J. Thomas added 13 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Holmes finished with four points, seven rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block in the effort.
Later in the week, Bonner and CBK Mersin notched a decisive win against Turkish League opponent, Antalya, 83-48. Bonner had 14 points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals in the victory. CBK Mersin moved to 14-4 in the Turkish League and up to third in Turkish League standings.
In the final week of Athletes Unlimited play, DiJonai Carrington and Team Cloud opened with a victory over Team Harrison, 88-78. Carrington had 22 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals in the win. Next, Carrington and Team Cloud fell to Team Brown, 97-88. Carrington notched 20 points, nine rebounds, three assists and one steal in the effort. In their last game of the week, Carrington and Team Cloud lost a close triple overtime contest to Team Hawkins, 116-111. Carrington tallied a double-double with 34 points and 13 rebounds, along with four assists, two steals and one block in her final Athletes Unlimited outing. Carrington finished seventh on the Athletes Unlimited leaderboard with 4,953 total points and tallied seven double doubles for the season.
To start their last week of games, Courtney Williams and Team Harrison fell to Team Cloud, 88-78. Williams tallied 21 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals in the loss. Williams and Team Harrison moved on to face Team Hawkins, where they lost 85-74. Williams contributed 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and one steal in the effort. In Team Harrison’s final game of the Athletes Unlimited season, they fell to Team Brown, 103-90. Williams had 22 points, five rebounds, nine assists and four steals in her final game. Williams finished ninth on the Athletes Unlimited leaderboard with 4,461 total points and amassed four double-doubles on the season.
Taj Cole and Team Brown dropped their first game of the week to Team Hawkins in a close match-up, 80-70. Cole contributed 17 points, one rebound and eight assists in the outing. Later in the week, Cole and Team Brown defeated Team Cloud, 97-88. Cole tallied 18 points, four rebounds, eight assists and two steals in the win. To close out Athletes Unlimited play, Cole and Team Brown defeated Team Harrison, 103-90. Cole had 24 points, three rebounds, nine assists and four steals. Cole finished the Athletes Unlimited season tenth on the leaderboard with 4,415 total points.
Alyssa Thomas, Brionna Jones and ZVVZ USK Praha handily defeated Czech League opponent Loko Trutnov, 139-54. B. Jones led her squad, dropping 37 points, five rebounds, four assists, four steals and one block. A. Thomas notched a rare quadruple-double, filling the stat sheet with 10 points, 13 rebounds, 13 assists and 10 steals in the impressive win. USK Praha remains undefeated in Czech League play at 16-0, sitting at first place in the standings.
Stephanie Jones and her Gorzow team lost to Polish League opponent, Polkowice, 87-47. S. Jones had five points, seven rebounds and three steals in the outing. The loss moves Gorzow to fourth in Polish League standings, with a record of 12-7.
Connecticut Sun players return to overseas play this week starting with Beatrice Mompremier and Uni Gyor playing Hungarian League opponent PEAC-Pecs at 12:00 P.M. EST on February 28. A. Thomas, B. Jones and USK Praha take on KP Brno at 12:00 P.M. EST; and J. Thomas, Bonner and CBK Mersin play Holmes and Prometey in Game 2 of the EuroCup quarterfinals at 11:00 A.M. EST on March 2. Mompremier and Uni Gyor match up with Cegledi at 11:00 A.M. EST; and A. Thomas, B. Jones and USK Praha play Zabiny Brno at 11:00 A.M. EST on March 5. To finish out the week, S. Jones and Gorzow match up with Ślęza Wroclaw at 12:00 P.M. EST; and Yvonne Anderson and Umana Reyer face Basket Costa at 12:00 P.M. EST on March 6.
