Uncasville, CT (February 21, 2022) – Jasmine Thomas, DeWanna Bonner and CBK Mersin opened last week’s off-season play competing in the EuroCup Playoffs Round of 16. CBK Mersin beat EuroCup opponent Flammes, 95-64 to start the round. J. Thomas nearly tallied a triple-double with 11 points, eight rebounds, nine assists and three steals, while Bonner notched 11 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals. CBK Mersin met Flammes again the next day for Game 2 of the Round of 16, beating them with a score of 79-48. J. Thomas had eight points, four rebounds, 11 assists and three steals, while Bonner notched 18 points, five rebounds, one assist, three steals and a block. With the win, CBK Mersin advanced to the EuroCup Playoffs Round of 8.
Stephanie Jones and her Gorzow team beat Polish League counterpart AZS Poznan, 92-74. S. Jones had 17 points, eight rebounds, two assists and one block in the effort. Gorzow is now third in Polish League standings with a 12-6 record.
Brionna Jones, Alyssa Thomas and ZVVZ USK Praha opened their week of games with a 154-28 win over Czech League opponent U19 Chance Strakonice. B. Jones tallied 28 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, two steals and two blocks; while A. Thomas notched 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. USK Praha then met EuroLeague Group A counterpart TTT Riga, beating them 84-64. Both Connecticut Sun players had impressive performances to lead USK Praha to victory. A. Thomas had a double-double with 19 points, 16 rebounds, six assists and two steals; and B. Jones tallied 32 points, five rebounds, two assists and four steals in the effort.
Dijonai Carrington and Team Cloud beat Team Harrison, 87-85. Carrington had a double-double with 20 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals. Team Cloud then lost to Team Hawkins in a close offensive battle, 113-110. Carrington notched an impressive double-double with 41 points, 14 rebounds, three assists and six steals. To end their week, Team Cloud beat Team Sims, 91-81. Carrington tallied her third double-double of the week with 28 points, 11 rebounds, one assist, four steals and a block on the night.
Taj Cole and Team Harrison lost a close battle with Team Cloud, 87-85. Cole had 14 points, three rebounds, three assists and a steal. Next, Team Harrison faced Team Sims, losing 87-71. Cole led her team in scoring with 26 points, four rebounds, five assists, one steal and a block. Team Harrison closed their week with a win over Team Hawkins, 100-93. Cole had 18 points, six rebounds and five assists in the effort.
Courtney Williams and Team Sims lost to Team Hawkins, 86-76. Williams had 11 points, eight rebounds, six assists and two steals. Next, Team Sims played Team Harrison, beating them 87-71. Williams tallied 19 points, six rebounds, five assists and a block. In their last game of the week, Team Sims lost to Team Cloud, 91-81. Williams notched a double-double with 17 points, 10 assists, four rebounds and two steals.
Beatrice Mompremier and Uni Gyor lost a close battle to Hungarian League counterpart PEAC-Pecs, 62-60. Mompremier had nine points, 10 rebounds and two assists in the effort. Uni Gyor is third in Hungarian League standings with a 13-5 record.
Jonquel Jones and her UMMC Ekaterinburg team faced Kaila Charles and her Dynamo Novosibirsk squad in Russian League matchup. UMMC Ekaterinburg came out on top, winning 93-57. J. Jones tallied 14 points, nine rebounds and two steals; while Charles notched a double-double with 12 points, 13 rebounds, two assists and two steals. UMMC Ekaterinburg remains first in Russian League standings with a 17-0 record while Dynamo Novosibirsk is sixth with a 8-8 record.
Natisha Hiedeman and her Nadezhda squad beat Russian League counterpart Enisey, 90-84. Hiedeman tallied 25 points, four rebounds, four assists, two steals and one block. The win improves Nadezhda’s record to 8-9 in the Russian League and improves their placement to fifth.
Connecticut Sun players return to action this week, starting with J. Jones and her UMMC Ekaterinburg team playing EuroLeague Group A opponent MBA Moscow at 3:00 A.M. EST; Carrington and Team Cloud playing Williams and Team Harrison at 9:00 P.M. EST; and Cole and Team Brown playing Team Hawkins at 11:30 P.M. EST on February 23. Joyner Holmes and Prometey play J. Thomas, Bonner and CBK Mersin in the EuroCup Playoffs Round of 8 at1:00 P.M. EST on February 24. Carrington and Team Cloud play Cole and Team Brown at 7:00 P.M. EST, and Williams and Team Harrison play Team Hawkins at 9:30 P.M. EST on February 25. February 26 sees a slew of games with J. Thomas, Bonner and CBK Mersin playing Antalya; A. Thomas, B. Jones and ZVVZ USK Praha playing Trutnov; S. Jones and Gorzow playing Polkowice; Mompremier and Uni Gyor playing PEAC-Pecs; Carrington and Team Cloud playing Team Hawkins at 10:00 P.M. EST; and Williams and Team Harrison playing Cole and Team Brown at 7:00 P.M. EST. A Connecticut Sun matchup between Hiedeman and her Nadezhda team and J. Jones and her UMMC Ekaterinburg squad, and a Russian League game for Charles and her Novosibirsk team against Nika Syktyvkar will round out the week’s off-season play.
