Overseas Rundown Vol. 14
Uncasville, CT (February 8, 2022) – As many national teams prepare for the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifiers, overseas play last week saw a significant drop in number of games.
Alyssa Thomas, Brionna Jones and ZVVZ USK Praha beat EuroLeague Group A opponent Umana Reyer, 84-75. Thomas nearly tallied a triple-double with 17 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and a steal in the contest, while Jones had 21 points, seven rebounds, one assist and a steal.
DiJonai Carrington and Team Cloud had a high-scoring win against Team Russell, 105-94. Carrington had 21 points, three rebounds, two assists and four steals. Team Cloud then matched up against Team Harrison, losing 95-89. Carrington notched 24 points, five rebounds, three assists and one steal. In their final game of the week, Carrington and Team Cloud lost to Team Brown, 97-84. Carrington tallied 28 points, six rebounds, seven assists and seven steals in the effort.
Courtney Williams and Team Harrison lost to Team Brown, 83-76. Williams had nine points, 11 rebounds and five assists. Team Harrison bounced back with a win over Team Cloud, 95-89. Williams had an impressive performance with 30 points, nine rebounds, six assists, two steals and a block. In their last game of the week, Team Harrison came out on top against Team Russell with a 100-74 victory. Williams notched a double-double with 14 points, five rebounds, 10 assists and three steals.
Taj Cole and Team Brown had a strong week coming out with a 3-0 record. Team Brown opened the week with a win against Team Harrison, 83-76. Cole had seven points, two rebounds, five assists and a steal. Next Team Brown faced Team Russell, beating them 98-85. Cole notched 23 points, two rebounds, six assists and three steals in the effort. Team Brown rounded up their week of games with a victory over Team Cloud, 97-84. Cole had six points, four rebounds and 12 assists on the night.
Jasmine Thomas, DeWanna Bonner and CBK Mersin beat Turkish League rival Galatasaray, 65-62. J. Thomas had 12 points, two rebounds, five assists and two steals; while Bonner tallied six points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals in the effort. The win moved CBK Mersin up to second place in Turkish League standings.
Stephanie Jones and Gorzow closed out last week’s games with a win over Polish League opponent Bydgoszcz, 71-65. S. Jones had 11 points, five rebounds, three assists, and a steal in the effort.
Connecticut Sun players return to action with Carrington and Team Cloud playing Cole and Team Brown at 6:30 P.M. EST, and Williams and Team Harrison playing Team Hawkins at 9:00 P.M. EST on February 9. B. Jones, A. Thomas and the USA Basketball team will play against Belgium in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament in Washington, D.C. at 6:30 P.M. EST; Williams and Team Harrison will play Cole and Team Brown at 7:00 P.M. EST; and Carrington and Team Cloud will play Team Hawkins at 9:30 P.M. EST on February 11. February 12 sees a slew of matches with a game from Beatrice Mompremier and Uni Gyor; Jonquel Jones and Bosnia & Herzegovina playing Canada in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament in Osaka, Japan at 1:00 A.M. EST; B. Jones, A. Thomas and USA Basketball playing Puerto Rico at 4:30 P.M. EST; Williams and Team Harrison playing Carrington and Team Cloud at 7:30 P.M. EST; and Cole and Team Brown playing team Hawkins at 10:30 P.M. EST. J. Jones and Bosnia & Herzegovina close out the week of games with a match against Japan at 4:00 A.M. EST on February 13.
