Connecticut Sun take down Indiana Fever, 81-78

Uncasville, CT (May 30, 2023)- Tonight, the Connecticut Sun (4-1) defeated the Indiana Fever (1-3), 81-78, to pick up their second home win of the season.

The Sun was led by Tiffany Hayes who tallied a season-high 22 points, five rebounds, two assists and one steal.

Connecticut jumped out to an early 16-12 advantage six minutes into the contest. Hayes led the way in the opening minutes with 10 points and one steal with 3:48 to play in the first quarter. The Sun finished the first quarter on a 6-2 run to take an eight-point lead into the second, 22-14.

Indiana opened the second quarter on a 9-2 run to cut Connecticut’s lead to one, 24-23, with 5:47 to play in the first half. The Sun finished the quarter on a 14-11 spurt to take a four-point advantage into the locker room. Brionna Jones led the Sun in scoring in the second with six of her 19 points on the night.

The Sun outscored the Fever, 26-24, in the third quarter, to take a 64-58 lead into the fourth. Jones tallied eight points, four rebounds and two assists while Alyssa Thomas added seven points in the third quarter to lead Connecticut.

Connecticut opened up the fourth quarter behind a quick five points from DeWanna Bonner and four points from Thomas to extend the lead to eight, 73-65, with 5:36 remaining.

Indiana cut Connecticut’s lead to six points with 1:17 to go in the game, 79-73. The Fever rattled off five more points to trail by only one with 9.4 seconds remaining, 79-78. Hayes stepped up to the line and nailed two free-throws to push the Sun’s lead back up to three, 81-78.

A three by the Fever’s Lexie Hull with 2.5 seconds left was off the mark and the rebound belonged to Thomas and the Sun to seal the victory.

Indiana was led by Aliyah Boston who notched 20 points, four rebounds, four assists and two blocks in the effort.

Connecticut shot 40.3% from the field (29-72), while Indiana went 42.5% (31-73) from the floor on the night.

  • With a season-high 19 points in the game, Brionna Jones eclipsed 1,500 points in her career.
  • With three rebounds on the night, Olivia Nelson-Ododa eclipsed 100 career-rebounds.
  • The Sun dished out a season-high 22 assists.
  • Alyssa Thomas pulled down a season-high 17 rebounds, one shy of her career-high. She also grabbed a season-high six offensive rebounds.
  • DiJonai Carrington tallied her first points of the 2023 season, nailing two triples off the bench in the win.
