Connecticut Sun defeat New York Liberty, 63-57, in preseason opener

Uncasville, CT (May 10, 2023)- Today, the Connecticut Sun defeated the New York Liberty, 63-57, in their first preseason matchup of the 2023 season.

The Sun were led by Brionna Jones who notched 10 points, four rebounds, one assist and two steals in 18 minutes of action.

The Sun opened the game on an 8-0 run including a five-point effort from Jones, but the Liberty closed the first quarter on a 18-7 run to take a 18-15 lead into the second.

Connecticut flipped the script in the second quarter where they outscored the Liberty 19-3. Former New York Liberty guard, Rebecca Allen, dropped seven points, two rebounds and two blocks on her previous squad in the second quarter to lead the Sun.

The Sun kept their run going into the third quarter, outscoring the Liberty, 17-12, to take a 51-33 lead into the fourth. Sun newcomer Olivia Nelson-Ododa came off the bench to lead Connecticut in the quarter with nine points, two rebounds and one steal.

The Liberty picked up the pace offensively in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Sun, 24-12.

New York was led by rookie forward Sika Koné, who tallied 10 points and four rebounds in 11 minutes off the bench on the game.

Connecticut shot 33.8% (22-65) from the field, while New York went 36% (18-50) from the floor on the day. The Sun forced the Liberty into 23 turnovers which resulted in 18 points for Connecticut.
