Playoff Seeding On the Line as Sun Host Sky Thursday Night

Uncasville, CT: The Connecticut Sun (27-12) host the Chicago Sky (13-26) in their final regular season game on Thursday, September 19 at 7:00 PM ET. The Sun are 3-0 against the Sky this year and will look for the regular season sweep in Thursday night’s showdown. The game will air on NBC Sports Boston and stream live on WNBA League Pass.

Storylines:

Last Time Out:

The Sun fell to the Minnesota Lynx, 78-76, on Tuesday night at home. Connecticut battled back from a 12-point second-half deficit to take the lead late in the fourth quarter but were not able to complete the comeback after a late three-point basket by Minnesota’s Bridget Carleton sealed the win for the Lynx. With two wins earlier this season against the Lynx, the Sun still took the regular season series, 2-1. Alyssa Thomas finished two rebounds shy of a triple-double, notching her 14th double-double of the season with 18 points, eight rebounds, 10 assists and two steals. It marked the first game the Sun has lost this season when Thomas tallied at least 10 assists (9-1).

Playoff Seeding Implications:

The Sun can clinch the No. 3 seed in the WNBA playoffs with a win on Thursday against Chicago. If they fail to win Thursday, they can also clinch the No. 3 seed with a Las Vegas loss on Thursday to Dallas. If Las Vegas wins on Thursday and Connecticut loses, Connecticut will fall to the No. 4 seed as both teams will have the same final record (27-13) and the Aces have the tiebreaker over the Sun with the season sweep (0-3). The Sky enter Thursday’s game with postseason hopes of their own. Chicago will need the win over Connecticut, as well as losses from both Washington (vs. Indiana) and Atlanta (vs. New York) on Thursday to get the final spot in the WNBA playoffs.

Opponent History:

Connecticut is 36-32 all-time against Chicago during regular season action, with an 18-14 record at home. The Sun have won six of the last seven regular season matchups dating back to the beginning of the 2023 season. Chicago enters Thursday’s game coming off an 86-70 loss to the Atlanta Dream on Tuesday. Head Coach Teresa Weatherspoon is in her first season with the Sky.
