Connecticut Sun at Las Vegas Aces Post Game Notes 6-2-22

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Connecticut Sun defeated the Las Vegas Aces, 97-90. The Sun handed the Aces their first loss at home this season.
  • Connecticut moves to 7-3, while Las Vegas moves to 9-2 on the year.
  • Jonquel Jones led the Sun with a season-high 20 points, seven rebounds, one assist and two steals in the victory.
  • Jackie Young finished with 26 points, three rebounds, and three assists to lead the Aces.
  • With 12 rebounds in tonight’s contest, Alyssa Thomas passed Asjha Jones for second in rebounding in Connecticut Sun franchise history. She now has 1,455 rebounds in her career with the Sun.
  • With 19 points in the win, DeWanna Bonner moved into 14th  in points all-time in WNBA history, passing Aces head coach, Becky Hammon. She now has 5,843 points in her career in the league.
  • The Sun jumped out to a quick 15-5 lead, forcing the Aces to call an early first quarter timeout with 5:15 to go. Bonner led Connecticut with two triples in the opening minutes. Jones added five early points in the opening stretch.
  • The Aces responded with an 8-0 run out of their timeout, but the Sun kept pace and led 37-22 after the first quarter of action. Bonner was a perfect four for four from behind the arc in opening ten minutes, leading Connecticut.
  • The Sun’s 37 first-quarter points is a new season high and ties the franchise record for most points scored in a quarter. The last time the Sun scored 37 points in a single quarter was in the fourth quarter of their 102-94 win against the Los Angeles Sparks on May 24, 2018.
  • After Connecticut’s hot start, the Aces outscored the Sun, 28-16, in the second quarter, cutting the Sun’s lead to three, 53-50 after the half. A’ja Wilson scored all nine of her first half points in the second quarter for Las Vegas.
  • Bonner led Connecticut with 12 points, one rebound, one assist and one block, while Young led Las Vegas with 16 points, one rebound, two assists and one block after two quarters of action.
  • The Sun shot 58.3% (21-36) from the field, while the Aces shot 57.1% (20-35) in the first half.
  • Las Vegas had the edge in points in the paint (24-20) and second-chance points (4-0) in the first half, while Connecticut outscored Las Vegas on the fast break (7-6) and bench points (7-3) heading into the locker room.
  • Courtney Williams had the hot hand coming out of the locker room, scoring eight of the Sun’s first 16 points in the third quarter. The Sun led 69-64 with 5:10 remaining in the third.
  • Connecticut took a 78-72 lead into the forth, outscoring Las Vegas, 25-22, in the third. Jones and Williams each had eight points in the third quarter.
  • The fourth quarter was a tight battle, but the Sun ultimately took home the victory, 97-90. Connecticut outscored Las Vegas, 19-18, in the last ten minutes of the game.
  • Bonner finished with a season-high 19 points, seven rebounds, four assists, one steal and one block.
  • Williams had 18 points, four rebounds, six assists, and two steals in the win.
  • Thomas notched a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, along with five assists and two steals.
  • Connecticut outrebounded Las Vegas, 37-31 and outscored them on the fast break 8-6 on the night.

 

NEXT GAME

The Connecticut Sun travel to Phoenix to take on the Mercury on Friday, June 3 at 7PM PT/10PM ET at the Footprint Center. The Sun went 3-0 against the Mercury last season and have won seven of the last ten regular season meetings, dating back to the 2018 season. The contest will be Connecticut’s third game in the last four days and their third game out of a four-road game stretch this week.
