Connecticut Sun Waive Handford

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (May 2, 2016) – The Connecticut Sun announced today it has waived rookie Aliyyah Handford.

Selected in the third round of the 2016 WNBA Draft with the 27th overall pick, Handford was the all-time leading scorer in the history of the St. John’s program, finishing her career 2,058 points. The Sun also cut free agent guard Heather Butler, who was signed to a training camp contract on April 21st, this past weekend.

Additionally, the Sun welcomed back All Star guard Alex Bentley, who rejoined Connecticut Monday after completing her overseas obligation in Turkey with Gelistirenler. Bentley established new career highs for scoring average (14.7 ppg.), steals (49) and three-pointers (31) in 2015, and was named to the WNBA Eastern Conference All Star team for the first time in her career.

The Connecticut Sun open the preseason with games on May 4th at 7 p.m. against the Chicago Sky and May 5th at 7 p.m. against San Antonio.  Those games are part of a two-day doubleheader. Atlanta will play the Stars at 5 p.m. on May 4th and the Dream and Sky will tipoff at 5 p.m. on May 5th.

Connecticut opens the 2016 regular season in Chicago on May 14th. The Sun play their first home game on May 21st at Mohegan Sun Arena, hosting the Washington Mystics at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by visiting connecticutsun.com or calling 877-SUN-TIXX.
