GAME RECAP: Strong Second Half Propels Sun to Win Over Mystics, 76-59

Connecticut remains sole undefeated team in WNBA.

Uncasville, CT (June 4, 2024)- Tonight, the Connecticut Sun (9-0) defeated the Washington Mystics (0-9), 76-59 at Mohegan Sun Arena. With the win, the 2024 Connecticut Sun are now tied with the 2017 Minnesota Lynx, 2003 Los Angeles Sparks and 2001 Los Angeles Sparks for the fourth longest win streak to begin the season in WNBA history, starting the year with a 9-0 record.

DeWanna Bonner led the Sun with 20 points, eight rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block in the win. This marks her fifth 20+ point outing of the season and the seventh time she has led Connecticut in scoring this season.

Brionna Jones recorded 15 points, three rebounds and one steal on the night, while Ty Harris added 14 points, one rebound, six assists, two steals and one block on the night. Alyssa Thomas tallied seven points, seven rebounds and seven assists for the Sun.

The Sun saw an advantage as big as seven in the first quarter but led the Mystics by just one after ten minutes of action, 19-18. DeWanna Bonner had 10 of her 20 points in the opening quarter. It was another close quarter in the second, with the Mystics outscoring the Sun, 15-13, to take a one-point lead into the break, 33-32. Washington outrebounded Connecticut, 21-12, in the first half of action. The Sun used a 13-2 run to begin the second half to pull ahead, going on to outscore the Mystics, 26-10, in the third and take a 15-point advantage into the fourth, 58-43. Washington wouldn’t get closer than 12 points in the final quarter, and Connecticut closed out the final minutes winning the fourth, 18-16.

Rookie Aaliyah Edwards led the Mystics in scoring in the effort with a career-high 14 points, along with nine rebounds, one steal and one block. Connecticut held Washington to 31.2% (20-64) shooting on the night, including just 25% (8-32) in the second half of action.

Notes:

  • With the win, the Connecticut Sun is 2-0 in Commissioner’s Cup play. Reproductive Equity Now, Connecticut’s Sun 2024 Commissioner’s Cup Recipient, will receive $2,000 for the victory.
  • DiJonai Carrington dished out a career-high five assists.
  • Tiffany Mitchell finished with a season-high seven points in 19 minutes off the bench.
  • With seven rebounds in the win, Alyssa Thomas is now tied with Margo Dydek for 21st all-time in rebounds in WNBA history (2,143)
  • Washington grabbed 13 offensive rebounds (tied for the most the Sun have given up this season) on the night and outscored Connecticut 10-3 in second chance opportunities.
  • The Sun won the battle in the paint (28-26) and on the fast break (9-2).
  • Connecticut struggled again from the free-throw line, shooting 59.3% (16-27). This marks the third straight game the Sun have shot under 60% from the charity stripe.
