Atlanta, GA (June 2, 2024)- Tonight, the Connecticut Sun (8-0) defeated the Atlanta Dream (4-3), 69-50, to stay undefeated on the season. The Sun now solely own the fifth longest win streak to begin the season in WNBA history, starting the year off with an 8-0 record. They are also now one of seven teams in WNBA history to start a regular season off with eight consecutive wins or better.
DeWanna Bonner led Connecticut with her first double-double of the season tallying, 18 points, 10 rebounds, one assist and two blocks. This marks the sixth time this year that Bonner has led the Sun in scoring.
Alyssa Thomas finished with a rebounds-assists double-double, tallying eight points, a season-high 14 rebounds and 11 assists in the win. DiJonai Carrington notched 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and one steal. Ty Harris added 13 points, four rebounds, three assists, one steal and a team-best +/- at +22.
The first quarter of action was a back-and-forth battle, with two lead changes and six ties, as both teams tallied 17 points after ten-minutes of action. Connecticut used a 20-6 run in the second to find some separation, taking a 12-point advantage at the break, 39-27. The Sun saw a lead as large as 22 in the third quarter, but the Dream were able to cut the advantage to 14, 57-43, heading into the fourth. Both teams struggled offensively in the fourth, as the Sun outscored the Dream just 12-7 to close out the 19-point win.
The Dream was led by Tina Charles who finished a double-double, notching 12 points, 12 rebounds, one assist, four steals and one block on the afternoon.
Connecticut shot 42.4% (28-66) from the floor while holding Atlanta to just 28.4% (19-67) from the field. The Sun have held two of their last three opponents to under 29% shooting (5/28 vs. Phoenix- 23.8%)
Notes:
- Alyssa Thomas grabbed seven first-quarter rebounds, her most in any single quarter this season. DeWanna Boner tallied eight second-quarter rebounds, her most in any single quarter in her WNBA career (previously quarter rebounds career-high 7- three times).
- Connecticut grabbed a season-high 45 rebounds in the win. The Sun outrebounded the Dream, 45-33.
- This marks DeWanna Bonner’s eighth consecutive game finishing in double-figures. This is the 10th time in her 15-year career where she’s had a streak of eight or more games finishing in double digits. Her longest streak in 24 consecutive games (8/8/20-5/30/21).
- Atlanta entered the contest averaging 7.5 three-point field goals a game. They went 3-16 in today’s game (18.8%).
- The Dream tallied a season-high 10 steals.
- With the win, the Connecticut Sun is 1-0 in Commissioner’s Cup play. Reproductive Equity Now, Connecticut’s Sun 2024 Commissioner’s Cup Recipient, will receive $2,000 for the victory.
