Sun fall to Liberty, 82-75, in Commissioner’s Cup Play

Uncasville, CT (June 8, 2024)- Today, the Connecticut Sun (9-1) fell to the New York Liberty (10-2), 82-75. The game was a back-and-forth battle, with eight lead changes and seven ties, but the Liberty used a 15-6 run in the fourth quarter to pull away for good. The Sun suffer their first loss of the 2024 season, after beginning the season on a franchise-best nine-game win streak.

DeWanna Bonner led the Sun in the effort, tallying 16 points, eight rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block. With two three-point field goals on the today, she also moved into 10th all-time in three-point field goals made in WNBA history, tying Nicole Powell (580).

Alyssa Thomas finished with a double-double, notching 10 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists and one steal. Brionna Jones added 13 points, four rebounds and two assists in a season-high 34 minutes of action for the Sun. Tiffany Mitchell recorded a season-high 12 points in 14 minutes of the bench in the game.

New York was led by Sabrina Ionescu who finished with 24 points, three rebounds, five assists and two steals. Jonquel Jones added 22 points, eight rebounds, five assists, one steal and a team-high four blocks.

The Sun shot 40.8% (29-71) from the floor, while the Liberty went 51.7% (31-60) on the day. The Sun outscored the Liberty in the paint (44-38), in second chance points (10-3) and off the bench (13-7). Both teams scored nine points on the fast break.

  • With 16 points in the game, DeWanna Bonner moved into 9th all-time in scoring in Connecticut Sun history, passing Tina Charles. Bonner now has 2,249 points in a Sun uniform.
  • With 13 points in the game, Brionna Jones moved into 13th all-time in scoring in Connecticut Sun history, passing Courtney Williams. She now has 1,785 points in her career.
  • New York finished with 0 offensive rebounds, which marks the first time in Liberty franchise history that a team has not grabbed an offensive rebound in a regular season contest. This is also the first time in Connecticut Sun history that an opponent grabbed zero offensive rebounds.
  • The Sun forced the Liberty into 12 turnovers, scoring 13 points off of those mistakes.
  • Connecticut outrebounded New York, 35-28.
  • With the win, New York will represent the Eastern Conference in the 2024 Commissioner’s Cup. Connecticut falls to 2-1 in Commissioner’s Cup games this season.
