Connecticut Waives Kaila Charles

Uncasville, CT (May 2, 2022) – The Connecticut Sun announced today that the team has waived guard Kaila Charles. Drafted by the Sun with the 23rd overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft, Charles has played in 51 regular season games and 11 playoff match ups for Connecticut. During regular season action with the Sun over two seasons, she averaged 4.7 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 0.6 steals and 0.4 blocks per contest.

 

During the 2021 season, Charles played in 30 games, starting four. She scored in double-figures six times and had a season-high 15 points. She earned her first career double-double against Dallas (6/22/21) when she finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Her first double-double came the same night she grabbed her 100th career rebound. Charles appeared in all four playoff games against the Chicago Sky in the WNBA Semifinal series and started in one, averaging 2.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 0.8 assists, 0.3 steals and 0.3 block per contest.

 

In her first season with Connecticut, Charles appeared in 21 of 22 regular season games and seven playoff contests. She averaged 5.4 points, 2.6 rebounds, 0.9 assists and shot 41.2% from the field in the bubble. She scored a regular season career-high 16 points against Washington (8/30/20) and played a career-high 34 minutes in an overtime game against Phoenix (9/9/20). Charles recorded a playoff career-high 13 points against Chicago (9/15/20) in an opening round win.

 

The Maryland native has also played two seasons of professional basketball overseas. Charles spent the 2020-21 offseason in Israel with Petah Tikva. She appeared in 16 games, averaging 35.3 minutes and 17.8 points per game. During the 2021-22 offseason, Charles played in Russia for Dynamo Novosibrsk. She averaged 17.7 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 11 games.
