Connecticut Sun fall to Las Vegas Aces, 102-84

Sun drop back-to-back contests for the first time this season

Las Vegas, NV (July 1, 2023)- Today, the Connecticut Sun (12-5) fell to the Las Vegas Aces (15-1), 102-84.

The Sun was led by DeWanna Bonner who tallied 19 points and two rebounds in the effort.

1Q- The Sun ran out to a quick 8-6 advantage forcing the Aces into an early timeout with 7:19 to go in the first quarter. Tiffany Hayes had four of Connecticut’s eight points early. Las Vegas finished the quarter on a 24-14 run to take an eight-point advantage into the second, 30-22. Bonner led the Sun with eight points and one rebound after ten minutes.

2Q- Las Vegas opened the second outscoring Connecticut, 12-11, to take a 42-33 lead with 5:12 remaining in the half. Bonner had four of the Sun’s 11 to open the second. The Aces finished the quarter on a 17-15 run to take an eleven-point lead over the Sun at the break, 59-48. Bonner led Connecticut in scoring with 17 points at the break. Alyssa Thomas added nine points, three rebounds, 10 assists and two steals in the first.

3Q- The Aces opened the second half on a 6-0 run to force the Sun into a timeout with 8:31 remaining in the third, 65-48. Las Vegas led by as many as 28 in the third, but Connecticut was able to cut it to 21, 84-63, heading into the fourth. Olivia Nelson-Ododa tallied four points in the quarter to lead the Sun.

4Q- The Sun outscored the Aces, 21-18, in the fourth quarter. DiJonai Carrington led Connecticut with six points, while Olivia Nelson-Ododa and Leigha Brown each added five points in the closing quarter.

Las Vegas was led by Kelsey Plum who notched 25 points, three rebounds and one assist.

Connecticut shot 47.1% (33-70 from the floor, while Las Vegas went 50% (36-72) from the field on the day.

Sun Notes:

  • With 19 points in today’s game, DeWanna Bonner moved into 14th all-time in scoring in Sun history, passing Brionna Jones (1,665).
  • With 11 assists on the day, Alyssa Thomas moved into second all-time in assists in Sun history, passing Lindsay Whalen (969).
  • Alyssa Thomas’s 10 first-half assists tied the franchise record for most assists in a half. Thomas set the record with 10 in the first half against Minnesota on 6/1/23.
  • With four rebounds in the game, DiJonai Carrington eclipsed the 200 career-rebound mark.
  • Leigha Brown tallied a career-high five points.
