Connecticut Sun win back and forth battle against Washington Mystics, 92-84

2023 All-Star duo, Bonner and Thomas, combine for 50 points.

Uncasville, CT (July 9, 2023)- Today, the Connecticut Sun defeated the Washington Mystics, 92-84.

The Sun was led by DeWanna Bonner who tallied 28 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. She knocked down a career-high tying six three-point field goals.

Alyssa Thomas added a season-high tying 22 points, nine rebounds, six assists, one steal and one block in the win.

1Q- Connecticut led Washington, 11-5, heading into the first media timeout of the contest. The Sun held the Mystics scoreless until the 5:36 mark in the first quarter. The Mystics ended the quarter on a 11-7 run to cut the Sun’s lead to two, 18-16, heading into the second. Alyssa Thomas led Connecticut with eight points, two rebounds and one assist in the first.

2Q- Washington opened the second quarter on a 13-6 run to take a 29-24 lead over Connecticut with 6:53 remaining in the first half. The Sun responded on a 12-10 spurt to cut the lead to three, 39-36, with 2:35 to go in the quarter. Thomas had six of Connecticut’s 12 on that run. The Sun finished the quarter on a 10-2 run to take a 46-41 lead into the locker room.

Bonner tallied 11 of her 15 first-half points in the second quarter to lead the Sun. Thomas added 14 points, four rebounds, three assists and one steal in the first half. Both teams had hot shooting starts with Connecticut shooting 54.3% (19-35) and Washington shooting 54.8% (17-31) from the floor in the first half.

3Q- The Mystics opened the second half on a 17-12 run to tie the game, 58-58, with 4:19 to go in the third. Ty Harris had five of the Sun’s 12 points in that stretch. Washington won the third quarter by six, 25-19, to take a 66-65 lead over Connecticut heading into the fourth. Harris led the Sun in scoring out of the locker room with nine points, including a buzzer beating three at the end of the quarter.

4Q- The Sun opened the fourth on a 9-5 run to regain the lead, 74-71, with 6:48 to go in the game. Bonner had five of the Sun’s nine on that stretch. Connecticut went on to outscore Washington, 18-13, the rest of the way to take home a 92-84 victory.

Washington was led by Tianna Hawkins who tallied a career-high tying 24 points, along with four rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block in the effort.

Connecticut shot 50.8% (33-61) from the floor, while Washington went 54.1% (33-61) from the field on the day.

Sun Notes:

  • With six three-point field goals in the win, DeWanna Bonner moved into 12th all-time in league history in three-point field goals, tying Renee Montgomery (532).
  • The Sun knocked down a season-high 13 three-point field goals, going 52% (13-25) from behind the arc. The team is now 5-0 when they shoot 40% or better from three.
  • Connecticut leads the season series against Washington 3-0. They have also won nine out of the last ten contests.
  • The Sun forced 18 Mystics turnovers, which led to 17 points.
  • Connecticut is 4-0 when scoring over 90 points this season.
  • Bonner has led Connecticut in scoring in four of their last five outings and is averaging 21.0 ppg in the month of July.
