Game Notes
- The Connecticut Sun (15-6) defeated the Dallas Wings (9-13), 80-59 in the first regular season game since returning from the Olympic break.
- After the first quarter, the Sun held a 10-point lead (24-14) and shot 56.2 percent from the field (9-16). Connecticut netted four three pointers, two of which came from DeWanna Bonner. Arike Ogunbowale had eight of her team’s 14 first quarter points.
- Connecticut grabbed a 47-27 advantage over Dallas and extended its 10-point lead to 20 headed into the half. Bonner led the Sun with 12 points, Brionna Jones followed with 10 points and Jonquel Jones led the team with 11 of the team’s 20 rebounds. Ogunbowale held 12 at the break for the Wings.
- Dallas outscored the Sun 19-15 in the third quarter on 9-of-14 from the field (64.3 percent). The third quarter was the only frame Connecticut didn’t shoot at least 50 percent. The Sun turned things around in the fourth quarter and outscored the Wings 18-13.
- Four Connecticut Sun starters scored in double-figures.
- J. Jones led the Sun with 19 points, 13 of which game in the second half and had a game-high 15 rebounds. She also secured her 11th double-double of the season and the 50th of her career.
- B. Jones grabbed 16 points and seven rebounds. She shot 66.6 percent from the field and 100 percent from the freethrow line (4-4). The Sun only went to the line eight times on the evening and netted seven of the eight attempts.
- Bonner added 14 points and shot 50 percent from the field. She scored eight first-quarter points including the team’s first two three-point field goals. Playing a team-high 35 minutes, she also tallied two assists, four steals and had one block.
- Jasmine Thomas was the last of the Sun with a double-digit scoring effort on the afternoon. The captain scored 12 points, netted two three pointers, handed out four assists and grabbed four steals.
- Briann January was one point away from double-figures. January added nine points on five-of-nine shots and led the team with five assists and had one blocked shot.
- The Sun, who rank second in the league in rebounds per game (37.1), dominated the boards over the Wings. Connecticut finished the contest with 34 total rebounds, 25 defensive and nine offensive. Connecticut’s defense tallied a season-high 12 steals and kept the Wings to a season-low 59 points, their previous was 68. The Sun limited turnovers to 12 while Dallas committed 21. Offensively, the Sun shot 50 percent from the field (33-66) and 41.2 percent from the three-point line.
- Dallas concluded the game with 22 rebounds and only one offensive board. The Sun were able to score 13 second chance points, however, the Wings were unable to score any. Connecticut also outscored Dallas 40-26 in the paint and 14-12 in fast break points.
- Ogunbowale led Dallas in scoring with 20 points, Allisha Gray contributed 11 and Marina Mabrey added eight off the bench. Ogunbowale shot 8-of-12 from the field, recorded five assists, four rebounds and one steal. As a team, the Wings shot 46.2 percent from the field (24-52) and 43.8 percent from behind the arc (7-16).
