Sun Bounce Back With Big Win Over Mercury
Uncasville — Courtney Williams had 25 points and 10 rebounds as the Connecticut Sun held off the Phoenix Mercury 91-87 at Mohegan Sun Arena Friday night.
With the game tied at 85 entering the final two minutes of play, Williams had six points and three rebounds to push the Sun (11-10) to the finish line before 7,695 on Pride Night. She tied her career high for rebounds.
Chiney Ogwumike added 22 points on a remarkable 10-of-11 shooting while Alyssa Thomas (11 points, 10 assists, eight rebounds) narrowly missed a triple-double while setting a new career high for assists. Jasmine Thomas added 14 points, four steals, three assists and a pair of rebounds.
The Sun had dropped three straight by an average margin of 4.6 points, including Wednesday’s 79-76 loss to the New York Liberty on a last-second three-pointer.
And when a 13-3 Phoenix run erased an 82-72 lead — a 26-foot three-pointer by Shekinna Stricklen put the Sun up by 10 with 6:31 remaining — Connecticut appeared to be on the verge of another tough loss.
But Williams scored on a layup and Diana Taurasi (28 points, seven rebounds, six assists, five made threes) missed from three-point range. A short time later, Taurasi missed again from 19 feet and Williams answered with a jumper.
A layup from Griner (19 points, six rebounds) made it 89-87, and Taurasi had another chance to tie the game, but missed from eight feet with 3.9 seconds left. Williams closed out the win with a pair of free throws.
DeWanna Bonner (16 points, six rebounds) and Angel Robinson (10 points, seven rebounds) contributed offensively for the Mercury (14-8).
Connecticut travels to Minnesota to face the Lynx on Sunday.
