Uncasville, CT (February 1, 2024) – Today, the Connecticut Sun announced that veteran guard, Rachel Banham has signed with the team on a two-year deal. Per team policy, no details were released.
“We are excited to welcome Rachel back to Connecticut,” remarked Sun General Manager Darius Taylor. “Her experience, sharp-shooting and versatility provides depth to our backcourt. She will be a tremendous fit with our team and organization.”
Banham, originally drafted with the fourth overall pick by Connecticut in 2016, spent the last four seasons with Minnesota. Last season, the 5-10 guard averaged 5.5 points, 1.0 rebound and 1.7 assists, while shooting 40.2% from behind the arc for the Lynx. Banham dropped a season-high 18 points, nailing five triples, against Indiana on August 10.
The Minnesota native began her professional career with the Connecticut Sun where she played her first four seasons in the WNBA. Banham, known for her shooting prowess, currently sits at 16th all-time in three-point field goals made (81) in the franchise record books and will look to add to her total with the Sun this upcoming season. She also enters her ninth season in the league with a plethora of postseason experience, including a trip to the 2019 WNBA Finals during her most recent season with the Sun.
Banham is currently serving as an Assistant Coach and the Director of Quality Control for the University of Minnesota Women’s Basketball team. In this position, Banham supports the basketball staff by enhancing the quality and efficiency in day-to-day operations and assists in game preparation and statistical analysis. Banham played for the Gophers from 2011-16, leaving as the program’s and the Big Ten Conference all-time leading scorer (3,093).
Banham and the Sun tip off the 2024 season on Tuesday, May 14 against the Indiana Fever at 8:00 PM EST at Mohegan Sun Arena.
