DeWanna Bonner’s Season-High Outing Leads Sun Past Wings, 109-91

Connecticut logs season-highs in scoring and three-pointers made in the win.

 Arlington, TX (August 16, 2024)- Tonight, the Connecticut Sun (19-6) defeated the Dallas Wings (6-20), 109-91, in their first game back after the Olympic break. With the win, the Sun sweep the Wings, 3-0, in 2024 regular season action, their first regular season sweep against Dallas since the 2021 season.

DeWanna Bonner led the way for Connecticut with a season-high 29 points, three rebounds, four assists, two steals and one block in the win. She nailed four three-point field goals, moving her past Tamika Catchings into eighth all-time in three-point field goals made in WNBA history (608).

Marina Mabrey made her debut with the Sun in tonight’s win, notching 17 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. She also finished a team-high +/- +19. Alyssa Thomas finished two rebounds shy of a triple-double with 12 points, seven rebounds, season-high tying 14 assists and two steals on the night.

Ty Harris notched 14 points, going 3/4 from beyond the arc, Brionna Jones added 12 points and Olivia Nelson-Ododa tallied 10 points in 13 minutes off the bench to round out the Sun’s double-figure scorers.

The Wings began the game on an 8-0 run forcing the Sun into an early timeout with 8:07 to play in the first quarter. The Sun finished the quarter on a 27-12 run to take a seven-point advantage into the second, 27-12. Marina Mabrey notched 10 points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal to lead Connecticut through the first ten minutes of action. The Sun took their largest lead of the half into the locker room, 50-38, outscoring the Wings, 23-18 in the second quarter. Alyssa Thomas dished out nine first-half assists, tying her season-high for assists in single half.

A strong third quarter extended the Sun’s lead to 21, 82-61, as the Sun outscored the Wings, 32-23, in the ten minutes coming out of the locker room. DeWanna Bonner led the way for Connecticut with 13 points, two assists, one steal and one block in the third. A 9-6 start to the fourth for Dallas cut Connecticut’s lead to 18, 88-70, causing the Sun to burn a timeout with 6:45 to play in the game. Dallas won the fourth quarter, 30-27, but Connecticut came away with the 109-91 road win.

The Sun shot a season-high 57.6% (38-66) from the field while holding the Wings to 43.9% (29-66) from the floor. Connecticut nailed a season-high 11 three-point field goals going 55% (11-20) from beyond the arc.

Notes:

  • Alyssa Thomas tied her season-high with 14 assists. It marked her fifth game this season with 10+ assists and her 19th points-assists double-double of her career. With 14 assists in the game, she also moved into 18th all-time in assists in WNBA history (1,342).
  • With 29 points in the win, DeWanna Bonner moved into seventh all-time in scoring in Connecticut Sun history, passing Jasmine Thomas. She now has 2,491 points in her Sun career.
  • Tonight marked the third time this season that all five Sun starters have finished in double digit scoring. The Sun are 2-1 when all five starters have 10+ points.
  • Connecticut let up 15 Dallas offensive rebounds, the most the team has given up the season.
  • The Sun hit the 100-point mark for the first time since the 2022 season (June 15, 2022 vs. Atlanta- 102).
  • Caitlin Bickle made her WNBA debut, logging two minutes in the win.
  • The Sun’s 50 first-half points marks the second time this season the team has put up 50+ in a half (55 vs. IND- 6/10). It was also the second time this season the Sun have hit six three-point field goals in a single half (also against Indiana on June 10).
  • The Sun outscored the Wings in the paint (46-32), but the Wings held the advantage in second chance points (12-11) and on the fast break (10-9).
