Connecticut Sun Rally Late, Defeat Los Angeles Sparks, 69-61 in Historic Game at the TD Garden

Sun use 14-2 run in the fourth to seal 20th victory of the 2024 season.

 Boston, MA (August 20 2024)- Tonight, the Connecticut Sun (20-7) defeated the Los Angeles Sparks (6-22), 69-61, in a sold-out game at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. The Sun moved to 2-0 in the regular season series and notched their 11th straight win over the Sparks, dating back to the 2020 season.

Tonight’s game made history as the first WNBA game to be held at the storied TD Garden. The Sun’s 19,156 tickets sold marked the team’s sixth sell out of the 2024 season, the third highest attendance to a WNBA game this season to date, and the largest number of tickets sold to a Connecticut Sun game in the franchise’s history.

DiJonai Carrington shined for the Sun in the win, leading the way with 19 points, four rebounds, one assist and three steals in the win. Brionna Jones enjoyed a successful night in the Garden, notching 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block. Her sixth point of the night also put her over the 2,000-point mark in her career. She is one of 12 players in franchise history to score 2,000+ in a Sun uniform.

Alyssa Thomas filled the stat sheet in the win with nine points, 16 rebounds, eight assists and three steals, while Ty Harris added 14 points going 3/6 from beyond the arc to round out the double-digit scorers for the Sun.

The game was a defensive battle, with both teams shooting under 40% on the night (Sun- 38.4% and Sparks- 39.4%). Connecticut turned Los Angeles over 22 times and scored 20 points off of those mistakes.

The Sparks were paced by Rickea Jackson and Azura Stevens who each notched 14 points in the effort. Los Angeles outrebounded Connecticut 42-36, but the Sun held the advantage in the paint (42-40) and on the fast break (15-8).

Game Runs:

1H: The Sun opened the contest outscoring the Sparks, 15-9, heading into the first media timeout. DiJonai Carrington notched seven of Connecticut’s 15 in the opening minutes. Los Angeles closed the quarter on an 11-2 run to take a three-point lead into the second, 20-17. Ty Harris tallied eight points and one assist to pace the Sun after ten minutes of action. A 6-5 start to the second by the Sun tied the game, 25-25, with 5:36 to play in the first half. DeWanna Bonner had five of Connecticut’s six points to begin the quarter. The Sun finished the second on a 16-10 push to take a six-point lead into the locker room. Harris led all Sun scorers with 11 points through twenty minutes of play.

2H: Connecticut opened the second half on a 6-2 run to push their lead to 10, 47-47, forcing the Sparks into a timeout with 5:35 to play in the quarter. The Sparks were able to close the quarter on a 9-6 spurt to cut the Sun’s lead to seven, 53-46. Alyssa Thomas had six of Connecticut’s 12 third quarter points. Los Angeles began the fourth of a quick 4-0 run to cut into the lead, 53-50, with 7:50 to play in the game. The Sparks continue their run tying the game, 53-53, with the Sun’s first fourth quarter points coming on a jumper from DiJonai Carrington at the 5:17 mark, 55-53. Los Angeles held a 59-55 lead over Connecticut with 4:15 to play, but Connecticut finished the matchup on a 14-2 run to take home the 69-61 win on the evening.
