Connecticut Sun pick up 84-72 road-win over Chicago Sky

Sun extend win streak to three heading into the All-Star break.

Chicago, IL (July 12, 2023)- Today, the Connecticut Sun (15-5) defeated the Chicago Sky (8-12), 84-72, in their final matchup before the WNBA All-Star break.

The Sun was led by Tiffany Hayes who tied her season-high with 22 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. Hayes knocked down a season-high four triples in the outing.

1Q- The Sky opened the game on a 7-1 run, forcing the Sun into an early timeout with 6:50 to go in the first quarter. Connecticut missed their first eight field goal attempts on the contest. The Sun responded on a 9-2 run to take a 10-9 lead with 4:13 remaining in the first. DeWanna Bonner had five of Connecticut’s 10 points on that spurt. The Sun finished the quarter outscoring the Sky, 12-8, to take a five-point advantage into the second, 22-17.

2Q- Connecticut opened the second on a 7-5 run to take a 29-22 lead with 5:56 to go in the first half. The Sky responded on a 6-3 spurt to cut the Sun’s lead to four, 32-28, with 2:32 to play in the second. Chicago continued their run, finishing the half outscoring Connecticut, 10-4, to take a two-point advantage, 38-36, into the locker room.

Hayes tallied a team-high 12 points, along with five rebounds, four assists and two steals in the first half of action. Alyssa Thomas added 11 points, five rebounds and three assists. The Sun turned the Sky over nine times in the first half, scoring 14 points off those mistakes.

3Q- The Sun opened the second half on a 13-8 run to take back the lead, 49-46, with 4:24 to play in the third quarter. Connecticut continued to click offensively, extending their lead to eight, 56-48, with 2:47 remaining in the third. The Sun outscored the Sky, 27-15, in the third to take a 10-point advantage into the fourth, 63-53. Bonner tallied 10 of her 21 points in the third to lead Connecticut, while Thomas added eight points and four assists in the ten minutes out of the locker room.

4Q- Chicago opened the fourth on a quick 4-3 spurt, leading to an early Connecticut timeout with 7:37 left in the game. The Sun responded on a 7-0 run, prompting the Sky to take a timeout with 6:07 left in the fourth. Chicago was able to cut it to as close as nine late in the fourth, but Connecticut was able to close it out, 84-72.

Chicago was led by Kahleah Copper who notched 22 points, three rebounds and four assists in the effort.

Connecticut shot 49.3% (34-69) from the field, while holding Chicago to 40.3% (25-62) from the floor on the day.

Sun Notes:

  • With a layup with 24.9 seconds remaining in the contest, Rebecca Allen eclipsed 1,000 points in her WNBA career.
  • Alyssa Thomas filled the stat sheet with a points-assists double-double, tallying 19 points, seven rebounds and 10 assists in the win.
  • DeWanna Bonner finished with 21 points, six rebounds, one assist and one block.
  • DiJonai Carrington tallied 11 points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal in 25 minutes off the bench.
  • Ty Harris dished out a season-high eight assists.
  • The Sun outscored the Sky in the paint (46-30) and from the bench (17-13), while the Sky had the advantage in second chance points (13-7) and on the fast break (16-14).
