Uncasville, CT (August 27, 2025) – On August 26, 1920, the Nineteenth Amendment was adopted and officially became part of the United States Constitution, which prohibits the state and federal governments from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of sex. In women receiving the right to vote on that day, the United States Congress designated August 26 as “Women’s Equality Day” 53 years later to commemorate the passage of the amendment and call attention to women’s continuing efforts toward full equality.

As a professional woman’s sports organization, the Connecticut Sun are continually encouraging inclusivity while supporting female athletes and fans of the sport within the community. To continue these efforts, the Sun hosted a Women’s EqualiTEA Day Happy Hour at the award-winning Hygienic Art gallery in New London on Women’s Equality Day.

The event tipped off with an ice breaker, and attendees played “Celebrity”. The goal was to figure out the name of the female historical figure or Connecticut Sun figure tapped on their back by asking questions to the other participants and encouraging fun interaction. As the Happy Hour continued, people flowed in and out of the gallery observing artwork and networking. Woman-owned Favorites Bistro Bar in New London provided grilled corn ribs, chicken and pork tacos, squash, and honey jerk chicken wings for everyone to enjoy, alongside a cash bar featuring a signature “Equalitea” drink.

At the halfway point of the event, 2024 New England Music Hall of Fame Young Artist of the Year, Ada Mae performed an original song and two cover pieces on the guitar. Before the age of 16, Mae received multiple awards and scholarships and later worked alongside Tony and Emmy award winners. The multi-talented artist also performed at the Sun’s inaugural Sun and Soul Fest in June.

Soon, the event began to wind down and attendees participated in a raffle to receive a free hand massager and an hour-long massage. The Sun also gave away tickets to the Connecticut Sun’s matchup against the Minnesota Lynx on August 30 to all in attendance. Fans and supporters of the Connecticut Sun left the event with a gift bag filled with special blended tea packages and a Connecticut Sun mug. In celebrating Women’s Equality Day, the Connecticut Sun continue to uplift powerful women pressing forward while providing safe community spaces for women to thrive and connect.

The Connecticut Sun will host its Women of Inspiration Night presented by Post University on August 30 at 7:00PM EST, as the team takes on the Minnesota Lynx at Mohegan Sun Arena. The Connecticut Sun and Post University will be honoring five exceptional women who have made strides in their respective fields industries— Alisa Bowens-Mercado, Nadya Okamoto, Stephanie Wheeler, Jahana Hayes and Patrice Farquharson.
