Connecticut Sun defeat Atlanta Dream, 85-68, in preseason matchup
The Sun go 2-0 in preseason competition
Atlanta, GA (May 14, 2023)- Today, the Connecticut Sun defeated the Atlanta Dream, 85-68, in their second preseason matchup of the 2023 season.
The Sun were led by former Atlanta Dream guard, Tiffany Hayes, who tallied 20 points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block against her team of ten years.
The Sun opened the game on a 6-0 spurt and took an eight-point advantage over the Dream after the first quarter of action, 26-18. Alyssa Thomas filled the stat sheet in the first ten minutes of play, leading Connecticut with eight points, five rebounds and four assists.
Connecticut outscored Atlanta, 19-16, in the second quarter to push their lead up to 11 at the halftime break, 45-34. Hayes came alive in the second quarter of action, dropping seven of her 20 points to lead the Sun heading into the locker room.
The Sun began the second half how they began the first, on a 6-0 run, pushing their lead up to 17, 51-34. Their defensive intensity continued throughout the third, outscoring Atlanta 23-17, to take a 68-51 advantage into the fourth. Hayes continued pushing pace offensively for the Sun, leading the team with 10 points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal in the third.
After leading by as many as 25 points in the third, the Dream closed the gap on the Sun in the fourth, trailing by only 13 with 5:26 to play. However, the Sun finished the contest on a 12-8 spurt to close out the win. DiJonai Carrington notched eight points, two rebounds, one assist and one block in the final ten minutes to lead the Sun.
Atlanta was led by Allisha Gray who notched 12 points, one block and one steal. AD Durr and Aari McDonald each added 11 points for the Dream.
Connecticut shot 48.5% (33-68) from the field, while holding Atlanta to just 27.5% (19-69) from the floor. The Sun outscored the Dream 48-22 in the paint and 11-2 on the fast break.
