Connecticut Sun Best the Los Angeles Sparks, 83-74
Sun improve to 9-3 on the season
Los Angeles, CA (June 18, 2023) – Tonight, the Connecticut Sun (9-3) beat former Sun Head Coach Curt Miller and the Los Angeles Sparks, 83-74.
The Sun was led by DeWanna Bonner who tallied 20 points, nine rebounds, three steals, one assist and one block. With her three pointer at the 2:38 mark, Bonner surpassed Allie Quigley for 14th on the WNBA’s all-time three pointers list with 512.
1Q – Los Angeles led the Sun, 10-9, heading into the first media timeout of the contest. Tiffany Hayes led the Sun with four points in the opening minutes. The Sparks maintained their lead to end the quarter, 19-15. Brionna Jones tallied five points, two rebounds and one assist to lead the Sun after the opening frame.
2Q – The Sun went on an 8-4 run to start the second quarter behind the fast-break passing prowess of Alyssa Thomas. Before the first media timeout at 7:08 in the second quarter, Thomas notched four assists to bring the score to 23-23. The Sparks were able to staunch the Sun’s progress leading into halftime, amassing a 21-16 run to end the second quarter. Thomas led the Sun in several categories to end the half, with 12 points, seven assists, and three steals.
3Q – The Sun started the second half strong, cutting the Spark’s lead to one point by the first media timeout at the 4:10 mark of the third quarter. The Sun continued to apply pressure, evening the score to 63-63. DeWanna Bonner ignited, amassing eight points in the third.
4Q – The Sun found another gear in the fourth quarter, led by Bonner and Thomas’s seven and six-point efforts, respectively. The Sun went on a 17-5 run over the last 7:39 in the game, keeping Los Angeles from scoring for the last three minutes of the contest to come out with the win.
Los Angeles was led by Nneka Ogwumike who tallied 19 points, 15 rebounds, five assists, one steal and one block.
Connecticut shot 53.1% (34-64) from the field, while Los Angeles was 41.2% (28-68) from the floor. The Sun outscored the Sparks in points in the paint (48-44), fast break points (19-11), and points off turnovers (19-12).
