GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Connecticut Sun defeated the New York Liberty, 92-65. The Sun set a new franchise record for most turnovers forced in a single game with 32 Liberty turnovers.
  • Connecticut moves to 2-1 on the season, while New York falls to 1-4.
  • In her first game back with the Sun this season, DeWanna Bonner led the way with 16 points, one rebound, three assists and four steals in the victory.
  • Betnijah Laney had 16 points, one rebound and three assists to lead the Liberty.
  • New York opened the game on a quick 10-2 run, forcing Connecticut to call an early timeout at the 6:20 mark in the first quarter. Laney led the way for New York, draining two triples in that stretch.
  • Alyssa Thomas had the Sun’s first six points to cut into the Liberty’s lead, 10-6. A Natisha Hiedeman three-pointer at the 1:26 mark of the first quarter gave the Sun their first lead in the game, 16-15.

  • Connecticut started the second quarter on a 11-0 tear, holding the Liberty scoreless in the second quarter until the 6:25 mark.
  • The Sun took a 51-32 lead into the locker room after two quarters of play. Bonner led the charge with 12 points, one rebound, one assist and three steals in her first half of the 2022 season.
  • After the 10-2 start by New York, Connecticut went on a 49-22 run the rest of the way to finish the half. The Sun held a 25-2 advantage in fast break points.
  • The Sun forced 19 turnovers in the first half, setting a new franchise record for most turnovers forced in a half of action. The previous record was 17 forced turnovers against Indiana on June 7, 2014.
  • Connecticut outscored New York 20-13 in the third quarter to give them the 71-45 lead with ten minutes left in the game. Jonquel Jones tallied eight of her 13 points in the third.
  • The Sun bench went to work in the fourth quarter, scoring 19 out of the Sun’s 21 fourth quarter points. Connecticut outscored New York 21-20 in the final ten minutes.
  • Hiedeman finished with a season-high 15 points. She also added three rebounds, three assists and three steals in 23 minutes off the bench.
  • Brionna Jones had a season-high 14 points, three rebounds and one block in 25 minutes coming off the bench for the first time this season. She also finished +39.
  • Joyner Holmes scored her first career points with the Sun, finishing with two points, three rebounds, one steal and one block in 12 minutes in the win.
  • The Sun outscored the Liberty in the paint 38-30 and in fast break points, 32-6. Connecticut’s bench outscored New York’s 43-20.
  • Everyone on the Sun roster played and scored in tonight’s win.
  • With two steals tonight, Jasmine Thomas moved up the WNBA all-time steals list, passing Swin Cash to move into 41st in WNBA history with 385 steals in her career.

The Connecticut Sun are back home on Friday, May 20 to play the Indiana Fever at Mohegan Sun Arena at 7:00 P.M. EST. The Sun went 2-1 against the Fever during the 2021 season, dropping the last head-to-head matchup of the year 73-67 in Indiana.
