On April 10, Connecticut Sun head coach and general manager Curt Miller will take part in his fourth WNBA Draft. Before the 2019 WNBA Draft presented by State Farm takes place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, let’s take a look back at his previous drafts. Of the 10 players that have joined the Sun as draft selections during his tenure, four are still on the roster and two draft day acquisitions are as well.

In 2016, Miller had a memorable first draft experience. On April 14th of that year, the team landed three of the first six picks in the WNBA Draft, which was held at Mohegan Sun Arena.

To kick things off, the Sun selected Morgan Tuck at No. 3 and then added Rachel Banham at No. 4. A few minutes later, Miller engineered a trade with the Los Angeles Sparks that included Jonquel Jones, selected with the No. 6 pick, and the 17th overall pick that evening in exchange for Chelsea Gray, the 15th and 23rd picks in the 2016 Draft and the Sun’s first round pick in 2017. Miller also selected Jamie Weisner at No. 17 and Aliyyah Handford at No. 27.

“Overall we’re ecstatic with the outcome and the five players we’ve added to the roster,” Miller said that night. “We feel like we hit the jackpot by being able to acquire three of the top six picks overall.”

The following year, the Sun selected Brionna Jones from Maryland in the first round with the No. 8 pick. Although Connecticut had traded its first round pick during the 2016 WNBA Draft, they got a first round pick back along with Lynetta Kizer in a three-way trade involving the Sun, the Phoenix Mercury and the Indiana Fever during the offseason. In the second round, Miller selected Shayla Cooper with the 13th overall pick and Leticia Romero at No. 16. He rounded out the draft by selecting Jessica January in the third round, No. 28 overall.

Last season, Miller again executed a draft day trade, this time sending Connecticut’s second round pick, No. 15 overall, as well as a second round pick in the 2019 WNBA Draft, to the Atlanta Dream in exchange for Bria Holmes on the afternoon of draft day. Later that evening, he selected guard Lexie Brown in the first round, No. 9 overall, and Mikayla Cowling from Cal with the No. 33 pick in the third round.
