Overseas Rundown Vol. 12

Uncasville, CT (January 24, 2022) – Briann January and her Sopron Basket team opened up last week’s overseas play with a close win over EuroLeague Group B opponent Dynamo Kursk. Sopron Basket bested their fourth-ranked adversary, 77-73. January had 11 points, two rebounds, four assists and two steals in the match. The win keeps Sopron Basket at the top of Group B Standings with a 7-4 record. Later in the week, Sopron Basket played tenth-ranked Hungarian League counterpart Cegledi, beating them 92-63. January had six points, two assists, and a steal on the night.

Alyssa Thomas, Brionna Jones and ZVVZ USK Praha lost an important game to EuroLeague Group A rival Perfumerias Avenida, 85-75. Despite the loss, both Connecticut Sun players left the match with double-doubles. Thomas amassed 17 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and two steals, while Jones tallied 21 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and a block in the effort. ZVVZ USK Praha sealed their spot in the EuroLeague quarterfinals, despite the loss, but they moved down to third place in EuroLeague Group A standings. ZVVZ USK Praha’s second game was another win, this time against second-ranked Czech League adversary Sokol, 95-65. A. Thomas had six points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. B. Jones had an impressive night with 31 points, seven rebounds, two assists and one block.

Natisha Hiedeman and her Nadezhda squad suffered a disappointing loss in Game 2 of the Round of 16 in the EuroCup playoffs to BC Polkowice, 87-68, effectively ending their run for the EuroCup championship. Hiedeman had 12 points, two rebounds, one assist, two steals and a block in the encounter. Nadezhda later lost to second-ranked Russian League opponent Dynamo Kursk, 74-66. Hiedeman had one point, five rebounds and one assist in the effort. Nadezhda is now ranked eighth in Russian League standings with a 6-9 record.

Stephanie Jones and her fourth-ranked Gorzow team beat tenth-ranked Polish League adversary Torun, 97-56. The win improves Gorzow’s record to 10-6. S. Jones had 29 points, two rebounds, two assists, three steals and a block in the effort.

Beatrice Mompremier and Uni Gyor beat eighth-ranked Hungarian League opponent TFSE-MTK, 82-60. Mompremier tallied 14 points, eight rebounds, one assist, and a steal on the night. Uni Gyor is now third in Hungarian League standings with a 12-5 record.

Jonquel Jones and UMMC Ekaterinburg had a strong performance against twelfth-ranked Russian League counterpart Spartak Noginsk, decisively beating them 112-40. J. Jones collected 22 points, seven rebounds, two assists, one steal and a block in 15 minutes of play. UMMC Ekaterinburg remains at the top of Russian League standings with a perfect 15-0 record.

Connecticut Sun players return to overseas action this week starting with EuroLeague and the inaugural week of Athletes Unlimited play. J. Jones and UMMC Ekaterinburg will face EuroLeague Group A counterpart MBA Moscow at 9:00 A.M. EST; January and Sopron Basket will play EuroLeague Group B opponent Galatasaray at 12:00 P.M. EST; A. Thomas, B. Jones and ZVVZ USK Praha will play EuroLeague Group A rival TTT Riga at 1:00 P.M. EST; and Dijonai Carrington will lead Team Carrington (purple) as team captain against Team Mitchell (gold) at 11:00 P.M. EST on January 26. Carrington and Team Carrington will play Team Russell (orange) on at 7:00 P.M. EST on January 28. A. Thomas, B. Jones and Mompremier all play in their respective league games; J. Jones and UMMC Ekaterinburg play EuroLeague Group A counterpart KSC Szekszard at 7:00 A.M. EST; January and Sopron Basket play EuroLeague Group B rival Fenerbahce Safiport at 1:00 P.M.
