Overseas Rundown Vol. 11

Uncasville (January 19, 2022) – Overseas play saw some exciting matchups between Connecticut Sun players to start the week. Kaila Charles and Dynamo Novosibirsk faced Natisha Hiedeman and Nadezhda for a Russian League game. Dynamo Novosibirsk bested Nadezhda, 81-78. Hiedeman tallied 20 points, two rebounds, four assists, one steal and a block. Charles had 21 points, seven assists, one assist and two blocks. Perhaps most impressive was her contribution from the free throw line, where she shot a perfect 10-for-10.

Later in the week, Hiedeman and her Nadezhda squad lost a close battle to EuroCup league opponent BC Polkowice, 75-72, in a EuroCup Round of 16 playoff match. Hiedeman had three points, three rebounds and three assists in the effort. Nadezhda closed out their busy week with a third game against Russian League counterpart Nika. Nadezhda fell 79-66. Hiedeman led her team with 19 points and three rebounds. Nadezhda is now ranked seventh in Russian League standings with a 6-8 record.

Brionna Jones and second-ranked ZVVZ USK Praha faced Jonquel Jones and first-ranked UMMC Ekaterinburg in a EuroLeague Group A showdown on ZVVZ USK Praha’s home court. UMMC Ekaterinburg came out on top with a 90-77 victory, with both Connecticut Sun players finishing as the top performers for their respective teams. B. Jones had 19 points, eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks. J. Jones had an impressive double-double effort with 20 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, four steals and four blocks. J. Jones also received the Player of the Week award for Round 13 of Russian League play after an 18 point and 17 rebound performance in a win against Rostov the previous week.

Stephanie Jones and her Gorzow team beat eighth-ranked Polish League adversary Sosnowiec, 87-71. S. Jones had 19 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals in the win. The victory moved Gorzow up to fourth place in Polish League standings, with a record of 9-6.

Beatrice Mompremier and third ranked Uni Gyor lost an important away game to second-ranked Hungarian League rival Atomeromu, 75-67. Mompremier tallied a double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds, one assist and a block in the match. Uni Gyor’s record is now 11-5 in the Hungarian League.

Charles and Dynamo Novosibirsk finished the week of games with a close match against third-ranked Russian League opponent MBA Moscow, losing 78-77. Charles had 25 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Connecticut Sun players return to action this week, starting with EuroLeague and EuroCup play. Alyssa Thomas, B. Jones and ZVVZ USK Praha will face Perfumerias Avenida at 2:30 P.M. EST, Briann January and Sopron Basket will face Dynamo Kursk at 11:00 A.M. EST, and Jasmine Thomas, DeWanna Bonner and CBK Mersin will face Flammes at 2:00 P.M. EST today. Hiedeman and Nadezhda will play in Game 2 of the EuroCup Round of 16 against BC Polkowice at 9:00 A.M. EST on January 20. S. Jones, Mompremier, A. Thomas, B. Jones, and January will all play on January 22. J. Thomas, Bonner and CBK Mersin will also play Game 2 of the EuroCup Round of 16 against Flammes at 6:00 A.M. EST on January 22. J. Jones, Hiedeman and Charles will close out the week with games in the Russian League.
