Connecticut Sun forward, Jonquel Jones has been named WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week for the second time during the 2021 season, the league announced today. Jones receives the honor for games played from Monday, July 5 to Sunday, July 11. This is the ninth time Jones has been named player of the week throughout her five-year career.
During Week 8 of WNBA play, the Sun defeated the Atlanta Dream (7/9) and the New York Liberty (7/11). Over the two contests, Jones averaged 20.5 points, 16.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and shot 53 percent from the field on 17-of-32 made field goals.
In Friday night’s game against the Dream, where Connecticut clinched its berth to the inaugural Commissioner’s Cup, the 6-6 forward recorded a double-double on 24 points and 16 rebounds. Jones shot 61 percent from the field (11-18), hit two three pointers and also dished out two assists on the evening. Connecticut defeated Atlanta 84-72. Two days later, the Sun grabbed a 71-54 road win over the New York Liberty. Jones notched her 10th double-double of the season with 17 points and 17 rebounds. Additionally, she handed out a game-high five assists and recorded two steals.
Connecticut heads into the Olympic break 14-6 overall and No. 3 in the league. Ahead of the break, Brionna Jones, DeWanna Bonner and J. Jones will participate in the AT&T WNBA All-Star Game on Wednesday, July 14 in Las Vegas, NV. J. Jones will compete in the MTN DEW 3-Point Contest at halftime of the all-star game. Before returning to regular season competition, the Sun will face the Seattle Storm in the WNBA’s Inaugural Commissioner’s Cup as the Eastern Conference representative. The game will be held on Aug. 12.
