Hot Takes: Down But Never Out

Young Emergence
In the absence of both Alyssa Thomas and Chiney Ogwumike due to injuries, Sun forward Morgan Tuck made her first start of the season and led the team with a season-high 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field. She also had five rebounds, one block and one assist in the 89-72 loss to Phoenix at Talking Stick Resort Arena on Saturday. Her scoring total was just one shy of her career-high or 21 points, set against Atlanta on May 13, 2017. Brionna Jones also set career-highs for points (17), made field goals (six) and blocks (three) in the game.

Posting Up
In a 103-92 loss to Seattle at KeyArena Friday night, Chiney Ogwumike set a career-high with 30 points on 13-of-16 shooting from the field. Her 13 made field goals were also a career-best. She became just the 13th player in franchise history to score 30 or more in a game. Ogumike’s previous career high was 26 points on July 20, 2016 at Dallas. Two days earlier, Ogwumike posted her second-straight double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds while playing all 40 minutes for the Sun in a 95-91 loss to Washington.

Breaking Barriers
Courtney Williams scored a career-high 34 points as the Connecticut Sun rallied from a 30-point deficit before eventually falling 95-91 to the Washington Mystics last Wednesday night at Mohegan Sun Arena. Sixteen of her points came in the third quarter alone. The 34 points were the most scored in regulation in the history of the franchise. Pee Wee Johnson had 35 points against Cleveland in a triple overtime game back on June 8, 2002, when the team was still located in Orlando. Williams also set a franchise record with 15 made field goals in the game.

Tale Of Two Halves
The Sun (7-4) tied a WNBA record for the largest deficit ever overcome to regain a lead in a WNBA game. Ironically, the record was originally set by Connecticut on August 3, 2010, when it rallied from 30 points down to take a lead in overtime at Minnesota in a game it eventually lost 111-103. The Sun trailed by as much as 61-31 with 1:43 left in the first half, and were down 65-37 at halftime. The 65 points were the most scored in a half by a Sun opponent in franchise history. Connecticut exploded in the third quarter, outscoring the Mystics 30-8 to rally within 73-67. Connecticut took its first lead of the game at 77-76 on a jumper from Courtney Williams with 6:58 left in regulation.
