Uncasville, CT (October 16, 2021) – The Connecticut Sun announced a partnership with Battlecon Basketball, a new Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team founded by UConn Huskies Maria Conlon, Stacey Nasser, Meghan Culmo and Ashley Battle. Conlon (2000-2004), Culmo (1988-1992) and Battle (2000-2005) are former UConn women’s basketball players and Nasser was the head student manager for the team in 2008, after having been a manager on the team from 2004-2007.
The program’s foundation is built upon integrity, accountability, leadership, community service, and hard work—values the co-founders have garnered during their time in the basketball world and hope to instill in young women across Connecticut.
“We believe that the Battlecon Basketball organization is well-aligned with our goals to positively impact the lives of as many young women in the Connecticut as possible. Their values as an organization seamlessly match ours here at the Connecticut Sun, and I couldn’t be more excited to have them as partners in our efforts,” Director of Franchise Development, Morgan Tuck, commented on the partnership.
The partnership serves as a way to extend the Sun’s reach in motivating young girls to strive to be their best, not only on the court but in their communities. Using the talent, resources and commitment of both the Connecticut Sun and Battlecon’s co-founders, the two programs hope to create meaningful relationships with young women who may not have had the opportunity or wherewithal to play basketball at a high level.
“The Connecticut Sun have built an amazing program and embody everything we are committed to teaching all those we come in contact with through BattleCon and beyond. Our commitment to bringing awareness to women in sports and specifically in Connecticut makes us perfectly aligned as partners. It is our goal to create an environment where we continue to grow young athletes to not only become phenomenal players but active participants in their communities. This partnership will allow these athletes exposure to this organization and all the tremendous things they have to offer and are already doing in our communities throughout the state. We are beyond honored to be able to have this unique partnership and bring as much value as we can to the sport in our state while also helping grow more and more interest to the Connecticut Sun franchise.” – Maria Conlon
Battlecon Basketball is having tryouts on October 23rd and 24th for girls in grades 5 – 11 at Notre Dame High School in Fairfield, Connecticut. To register for tryouts or for more information, go to battlecon.org.
