The Sun improved to 4-0 for the first time in franchise history, scoring 100 or more points for the third time this season. Connecticut joins Phoenix as the only team in WNBA history to ever to score 100 points three times in four games. The Mercury did it multiple times.
The point total tied the franchise record, matching the 110 scored at Los Angeles on July 7, 2007. The 62 second-half points were a franchise record for points in a half while the 42 made field goals were one short of the franchise record.
Jonquel Jones and Alex Bentley each had a season-high 20 points, leading five Sun players in double figures. Chiney Ogwumike (17 points, seven rebounds), Courtney Williams (15 points) and Alyssa Thomas (10 points, 13 rebounds) also scored in double figures. It was the second double-double of the season for Thomas.
Morgan Tuck, who starred at nearby Bolingbrook High School, had a season-high nine points playing in front of a large contingent of family and friends. She scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter as the Sun made 8-of-11 shots over the first 5:06 while outscoring the Sky 17-5.
The Sun scored 33 points off 23 Sky turnovers. Chicago fell to 2-3 on the season.
The Sun were just 1-of-7 from the field to start the game, but made 9 of their last 18 while outscoring the Sky 21-12 over the last six minutes of the quarter to build a 23-19 lead.
Connecticut was still holding a slim 34-31 lead with just over five minutes left in the half when Betnijah Laney’s steal led to an Alyssa Thomas layup. A Laney rebound led to a Jasmine Thomas three-pointer on the next possession, and the Sun were off on a 14-2 run.
Williams led all scorers with 13 points in the half while Alyssa Thomas had seven rebounds for the Sun, who converted 14 Chicago turnovers into 17 first-half points on the way to a 48-35 lead at the break.
Chicago would get as close nine points (54-45) with 6:24 left in the third quarter. The Sun outscored the Sky 20-12 the rest of the quarter, and opened the fourth with that 17-5 run.
Connecticut will be at Washington Sunday at 3 p.m. The game can be seen live on NBC Sports Boston.
