Atlanta — The Connecticut Sun dropped its first game of the 2018 season, falling 82-77 to the Atlanta Dream at McCamish Pavilion on Tuesday night.
Forward Alyssa Thomas had another immense night, collecting 19 points while tying a career high with 17 rebounds, earning her third double-double of 2018. She also had six assists. Chiney Ogwumike added 12 points and nine rebounds while Courtney Williams had 11 points and nine more rebounds.
But Connecticut (5-1) — the last undefeated team in the WNBA — struggled from the field after a solid start. The Sun made a season-low 36.6 percent of their shots from the field (30 of 82) and were held to their fewest points of the season.
Leading by as much as nine early on, the Sun were 10 of 19 from the field with four made three-pointers while building a 25-19 first quarter lead.
But the Dream (3-3) outscored Connecticut 27-15 in the second quarter, earning a 46-40 lead at the break. It was just the second time this season Connecticut trailed at halftime. Thomas (eight points, seven rebounds, four assists), Williams (nine points) and Alex Bentley (seven points) led the Sun in the first half.
Tiffany Hayes (16 points) and Renee Montgomery (12 points) were a combined 9 of 13 from the field with five made threes in the first half. Hayes finished with 22 points while Damiris Dantas had 15.
The Sun outscored Atlanta 19-14 in the third quarter as Thomas, Ogwumike and Rachel Banham combined for 15 points, pulling Connecticut within 60-59 after three quarters.
A three-point play by Thomas tied the game at 62 with just over nine minutes remaining, and the game was tied again at 64 a short time later.
But Connecticut could not convert on multiple possessions with chances to take the lead, and Atlanta held on in the closing minutes.
Connecticut will be on the road to face the New York Liberty Thursday night at 7 p.m.
