Sun Partnering With American Heart Association

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (August 2, 2016) – The American Heart Association (AHA) is proud to announce that the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun will host a special game night at Mohegan Sun on August 30th to raise awareness of heart disease and stroke, and share opportunities to get involved locally in the mission of the American Heart Association.

The American Heart Association and Mohegan Sun continue to collaborate in the fight against heart disease and stroke in Connecticut. On game night, fans can join in the heart-healthy fun throughout the game as we highlight and celebrate survivors and their loved ones! The AHA will offer information about upcoming events, opportunities to volunteer, and ways to reduce your risk of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Special discount tickets available for $22 (box office regular price is $24), with $6 going back to the American Heart Association’s Eastern Connecticut Heart Walk. The 2016 Eastern Connecticut Heart Walk (formerly known as the Rocky Neck Heart Walk) will take place on Sunday, September 25th at 10 a.m. (festivities at 9 a.m.) at the Mohegan Reservation in Uncasville, CT.  Kevin P. Brown, Chairman of the Mohegan Tribe, will chair this event in its 27th year. The Heart Walk will feature a three-mile walk, heart-healthy lunch, kid’s activities and more. The goal for the event is to raise more than $220,000 to support the mission of the American Heart Association by funding lifesaving research, education and public policy changes to build a healthier community.

“It is no secret that heart disease affects the Native American community at rates higher than most others,” Brown said. “I myself have lost a brother and two first cousins in their 50’s to heart disease. Add to this the fact that as an employer of over 10,000 people, we recognize the importance of wellness in the workplace. This defines why I personally, and the Mohegan Tribe and the Mohegan Sun collectively, have been ardent supporters of this important event for many years. I take particular pride in the fact that the Mohegan Tribe will host the walk on the Mohegan Reservation this year in the season of our 20th Anniversary celebration of the opening of the Mohegan Sun.”

The mission of the American Heart Association is vital to the state of Connecticut. In fact, 8,438 people died of heart disease and stroke in 2014, the latest year stats are available. In the last year alone, the American Heart Association has funded more than $10.2 million in cutting-edge scientific research to fight heart disease and stroke, Connecticut’s number 1 and number 5 killers.

The Eastern Connecticut Heart Walk is locally sponsored by Mohegan Sun, Frontier Communications, Hartford HealthCare Heart & Vascular Institute at Backus and Windham Hospitals, Waterford Group Charitable Foundation and more.  Media sponsors include Soft Rock 106.5, Jammin 107.7, News Now 94.9, U.S. Country 99.5 Radio and The Day. The Heart Walk is nationally sponsored by Subway.

The American Heart Association encourages companies, families and friends to create a team, register at www.RockyNeckHeartWalk.org and participate in the 3-mile walk. No minimum donation is required.
