Hey Sun fans,
I hope everyone is enjoying the first week of February and the news around the league regarding free agency. We were happy to announce yesterday the re-signing of starting point guard Jasmine Thomas. We look forward to announcing other re-signings and also new free agents signed to training camp contracts in the near future. I am also happy to report that I enjoyed watching Morgan Tuck work out this week. Truly excited about her future.
As for my match-ups of the week, I encourage our fans to follow the game tonight as Stanford hosts a dangerous USC team. Tara VanDerveer is only one win shy of her 1,000th. I certainly know that our own Chiney Ogwumike will be watching and cheering on the Cardinal this evening.
The other matchups this weekend take on a personal angle for me.
Saturday’s matchup between Bowling Green State University and Akron may not have WNBA prospects but it is Alumnae Day at BGSU. It is significant for me because this season marks the 10-year anniversary of our run to the Sweet Sixteen in the 2007 NCAA Tournament. We finished the season with a 32-4 record that included a close loss to top-ranked Duke and an overtime setback against Notre Dame.
Lastly, there is an interesting Big Ten Sunday match-up between host Indiana and third-ranked Maryland that will also pull on my heart strings. My first recruiting class at Indiana is now seniors, and the entire starting line-up for the Hoosiers are players recruited during my tenure in Bloomington. The Hoosiers are an impressive 23-1 in their last 24 home games but will have a tough challenge with Maryland’s depth and athleticism. WNBA fans know about Maryland’s top seniors but I encourage you to watch the match-up between IU’s Tyra Buss and Maryland’s freshman sensation Destiny Slocum. If IU can stay out of foul trouble and rebound, don’t be surprised if this is a tough out for Maryland.
Enjoy the weekend and stay tune for more news regarding the SUN!
